MADISON, Wis.—“Absolutely amazing!” exclaimed Ms. Sue Ellen Maguire. The marketing director for the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra attended the opening presentation of Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company as it graced the stage of the Overture Center for the Arts April 4.
“It was everything that I thought it would be, but more. I had seen the video beforehand and I thought, WOW! Colorful, exciting, precise. And when I got here it was … it was just … an incredible experience! It’s really hard to explain how wonderful it was. The music was spectacular. The dancing—impeccable! And I love how they interacted with the screen. The characters would come from the screen and all of a sudden come to life. Really fun, really exciting.”
By harmoniously combining a classical Western orchestra with classical Chinese instruments, the Shen Yun orchestras have unveiled a new musical realm appreciated by countless audience members worldwide.
With her background in music, Ms. Maguire was amazed by this unique blend. She said, “That’s the main thing that intrigued me, of course, working for an orchestra, is the matching of the Eastern and the Western instruments that came together seamlessly in such a beautiful way that it just touched my soul to the very core. It’s beautiful.”
Classical Chinese dance is said to have a history of several thousand years and was passed down through each Chinese dynasty. Over the years, it has become a comprehensive system of dance that boasts a variety of unique rhythms, movements, and meanings, according the Shen Yun’s website.
Ms. Maguire was visibly moved by the New York-based show and said, “It’s almost a spiritual experience. There’s something within your soul that kind of leaps; it almost dances. My heart dances. My soul dances. And it’s just a joyful experience and just spectacular. I couldn’t stop grinning the whole time. I was just thrilled.”
The Marketing Director felt everyone should experience Shen Yun for themselves. She said, “GO! Whatever you do; buy a ticket. Go see it. It’s well worth it. You’ll enjoy it. If you enjoy music, you’ll enjoy this show because it’s—the music is so beautiful and combine that with dancing, and the screen, and the interaction. Of all of those things, that can only elevate the music to another level—and it does. It’s just, it’s really hard to put into words, but it’s just spectacular!
The people of China have long held that their magnificent culture was a gift from the heavens. Artists cultivated virtue because they felt that to create something worthy of the divine, there must first be inner beauty and peace.
Ms. Maguire said the performances touched her on a spiritual level. “It’s another level. It’s another level of thinking. It’s another, almost another level of spirituality of humanness when music and art touches your soul—and this did. It really took me to a higher level—just beautiful.”
She felt that the messages she saw in the performances could positively impact the rest of the world. “You know, I think people get so distracted with the physical manifestations of everything that they forget what’s behind it, its power, its beauty. It’s the majesty of it. It’s [like] a palm tree that can bend with the wind with a storm, but they can withstand it. There’s more to it than just the physicality. If you can look beyond that and see the spiritual nature of it, you can’t help but be happy.”
Ms. Maguire highly recommends Shen Yun to others. “Majestic, touching, beautiful, spiritual, that’s not a phrase. It’s hard to put into just one phrase. If anybody has the opportunity to see this production, it can’t help but touch you.”
